According to the weather forecasts summer is now on its way, and looking through my office window I feel that they at last be right.

One thing summer does mean is that the Summer Blockbusters will soon be released at the cinema.

However, the cinema is not always a place that is easily accessible for families affected by autism. In fact it can be a traumatic and stressful experience for all concerned.

Autism Friendly Screenings are designed to make families feel welcome, comfortable and relaxed in an environment that can otherwise seem traumatic, enjoying a film with other families who experience similar issues.

Dimensions is a not for profit organisation and they offer Autism Friendly Screenings at over 250 cinemas in partnership with Cineworld, ODEON, Showcase and Vue cinemas.

Every month, each participating cinema shows a different film from a selection of new releases and classics including Pixar animations, Disney adventures and many more films suitable for all age ranges.

What makes the screenings autism friendly?

  • The lights will be on low
  • The volume will be turned down
  • There will be no trailers at the beginning of the film
  • You’ll be able to take your own food and drinks
  • You’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like, however children must be supervised at all times.

Each cinema chain hosts one Autism Friendly Screening each month.

Cineworld host an Autism Friendly Film at 11:00am on the 1st Sunday of every month, at over 70 participating cinemas across the UK.

Showcase Cinemas and Cinemas De Luxe host Autism Friendly Screenings at 10:00am every 2nd Sunday of the month, at all their cinemas across the UK.

ODEON Cinemas host an Autism Friendly Screening 11:30am each month, at over 95 ODEON cinemas across the UK. You can find out the details of the screenings at your local cinema simply select the “Autism Friendly Screenings” filter when viewing the performances at your cinema. If no performances are displayed, there may not be any Autism Friendly screenings that week – in that case you can contact our “Disability and Accessibility Helpline” who will be able to advise you further or ask in cinema.

Vue Cinemas will host an Autism Friendly Film at 10:00am on the last Sunday of every month, at 78 cinemas nationwide.
